Laws have been passed in many countries to protect the elephant from destruction -- but these laws are ignored, even by the countries that passed the laws --  all for the sake of the ivory trade.

Measures have been taken to reintroduce the elephant into areas where elephant herds have nearly disappeared. But this is a mixed blessing:
the territories available are growing smaller

and smaller because of the needs of humans -- and because of the elephants' habit of tearing down trees in order to eat the leaves, the land becomes more and more barren. 

Elephant herds may often find an open range but not ultimate peace.
