Here at the foot of the splendid Kilimanjaro lies land rehabilitated, land renewed, land protected -- but a land of mixed blessings.
Here many elephant herds find their home .. no longer destroyed by the mad driving of tourists trying to see the Big Five all in one day ... but their home grows smaller and smaller because of conflicting needs of animal and human -- and the land becomes more barren as a result of the elephant's habit of tearing down trees in order to eat the leaves. Here the elephant finds an open range but not ultimate peace.
Here is a mountain of great reknown .. a mountain often hidden behind clouds of its own making. The finest, purest waters come from this mountain. But the snows of Kilimanjaro are melting too fast ... there is more to be done to protect this region. It's not too late to turn the Global Warming around; but we all must contribute or we all lose.
